Georgia Trooper PITs Fleeing Altima Into A Tree

Estimated read time 2 min read

A simple speed violation, going 71 mph in a 55 mph zone, led to a long pursuit of a Nissan Altima by Georgia State Patrol. In the end, the car has its tires spiked and the trooper PITs it into a tree, making for a dramatic close to the chase.

Watch a Florida trooper tango with Big Altima Energy.

Before that, we see the chase go all the way across the Alabama state line as the suspect uses the Nissan to drive on the wrong side of the road. With the rolling hills, that’s an incredibly dangerous move since it’s impossible to see if there’s a car coming the opposite direction.

The driver makes enough other reckless moves that it’s surprising the trooper doesn’t just PIT right away. Instead, a Stop Stick trap is set up ahead, probably to slow the suspect down so a PIT will be less likely to result in serious injury or a fatality.

That strategy works, slowing the chase down, but as the tires disintegrate on the passenger side of the Altima, the suspect driver has trouble keeping control of the vehicle. He might even be struggling to bring it to a stop, which is mentioned in the trooper’s report.

To help the suspect out, the trooper does a PIT maneuver, only the Nissan doesn’t behave normally. Instead of going into a ditch free of obstacles, it swerves around for a bit, then hits a tree nose-first. Thankfully with the lower speed the occupants are able to run away, then get caught.

So many times, people pretend like cops chasing down people who flee from traffic stops for simple offenses like speeding is a sign of law enforcement overkill. While such a thing is real, it’s also a reality that your average person pulls over when caught speeding instead of leading police on a high-speed chase.

In this instance, the suspect had warrants and was allegedly an armed felon. So he wasn’t just some guy who was speeding and that’s it.
