Stolen Corvette Chase Ends In A Swamp

Estimated read time 2 min read

Stolen car chases can lead to crazy things, but it’s not often we see one terminate in a swamp. That’s where an alleged Corvette thief and his female passenger ended up after leading police in North Carolina on a multi-county pursuit. We’d make a joke about car thieves being swamp creatures, but that would be offensive to actual swamp creatures.

Bad parking job leads to stolen BMW bust.

The destroyed Corvette Stingray pictured was apparently going well over 100 mph as the driver ran from an attempted traffic stop for speeding in Scotland Neck, Halifax County. Eventually, the chase ended up in Princeville, Edgecombe County where authorities were ready to join in.

Nothing in the report mentions Stop Sticks or a PIT maneuver, just that the suspect driver, 24-year-old Zyrell Webb of Fayetteville, wrecked out into a guardrail. It might have been from police intervention or just that he wasn’t that great of a driver.

Either way, you can see the front end of the ‘Vette basically exploded. We think this might be a C8 but can’t be completely sure since enough of the sports car was destroyed and the images of the thing were taken in the dark that it does leave a bit of doubt.

However, the lack of an engine sitting somewhere nearby makes us think it’s still nestled behind the seats and wasn’t in the obliterated front end.

As for Webb and his female passenger, they either weren’t injured in the crash or at least weren’t injured enough to keep them from running off and hiding in a nearby swamp. Police had to deploy some drones to find them, the woman requiring rescue from the water. It’s always ironic when criminals flee but then have to be rescued by police, often with a lot of resentment coming from the suspect.
