Among car enthusiasts, Angeles Crest Highway outside of Los Angeles in Southern California is a legendary stretch of road. While some believe it’s overrated, enough people with performance vehicles who live in the area or visit test their mettle on the twisting, winding road to make accidents like this one between two Porsche 911s inevitable.

The wreckage of a 997 and a 991 GT3 displayed on X by the Special Enforcement Bureau of Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department looks pretty gnarly, and not in a good way. After all, the back end of the 997 is destroyed, the flat-six engine disemboweled and left sitting in the middle of the road.
The 991 GT3 didn’t fare much better. It suffered some front end damage, but what took the brunt of the blow was obviously the caved-in driver’s side of the car. Plus, the front driver’s side wheel was sheered off.
Draw your own conclusions about how exactly the damage on the two cars matches up. If you can then diagram how the accident unfolded, perhaps you should be working in crash forensics. This one seems a little perplexing to us but we hope investigators are able to make sense out of the evidence at the scene.
Speaking with Road & Track, California Highway Patrol said they’re going with the finding that one of the drivers made an unsafe turn on the road, which in turn caused the crash. That’s preliminary, so the final conclusion might be different.
Reportedly, both drivers complained of some discomfort suffered by the crash forces but weren’t taken by ambulance to a hospital.
This incident is a great example of what happens when people think driving a highly capable performance car does for their personal talent. Despite what some believe, it doesn’t make up for lack of skill behind the wheel and in fact could amplify those deficiencies.
