With a call to help Smyrna Police stop a Kia which had been fleeing from officers into Atlanta, a Georgia trooper took quick action to bring the chase to a close. By that we mean he pitted out the suspect car as it blasted down the highway at 130 mph and the whole thing was caught on dashcam video.
Stolen Kia chase is fiery but mostly peaceful.
While Arkansas State Police get a lot of attention on the internet for its brutal PIT maneuvers, Georgia State Patrol can be just as severe towards those who think they can outrun the law. We have plenty of example of this, but for those who have missed those or maybe don’t remember, this video should suffice.
The trooper has to play catchup to the chase as it progresses. That requires some fancy driving at high speeds, avoiding even the chance of a collision with citizens who seem to think pulling to the right fore emergency vehicles is only for the weak.
He also has to contend with police cars trailing behind the fleeing Kia, showing off the superior high-speed pursuit training GSP puts troopers through.
A second trooper pulls up with our camera car and not too long after we see the suspect crossover in the left lane.
You can see on the trooper’s windshield there’s at least some precipitation or water on the interstate, yet the suspect driver pushes the Kia like he’s flogging a donkey. Considering conditions and the quality of the vehicle, that’s just not a great life decision, but criminals aren’t know for their aptitude in such things.
After sizing up the suspect vehicle and clearing some traffic, the lead trooper decides to go in for a PIT. But the Kia gets loose right in that moment, preventing the cruiser from making any meaningful contact.
A second PIT attempt was similarly frustrated, leading us to believe the other driver has done this before. The trooper sounds a little upset, but he also seems to focus and double down on stopping the Kia.
That’s easier said than done, thanks in part to traffic on the road and in part thanks to the suspect’s obvious skills. But the trooper finally makes an effective move on an empty stretch of the interstate, pitting the Kia at 130 mph.
Even still, the suspect tries limping the badly damaged crossover along, but it’s useless. Messing with GSP isn’t a smart strategy.
