We know some people get really upset whenever they feel police behave recklessly during a chase, but this one involving a Florida trooper pursuing an armed carjacker justifies that kind of response. After all, someone who’s willing to steal a person’s vehicle at gunpoint poses a danger to everyone in the area, so letting that individual get away comes with tremendous risks.
Fleeing Tesla taken down by a dinosaur car.
Before the Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrives on the scene, Tallahassee police were giving chase to the stolen Toyota Tundra. Stopping a full-size truck like that is no easy task, especially when there’s the risk of the driver opening fire once you get close.
But the trooper takes the lead in the pursuit, working his way past the local police on a narrow two-lane road. While many people pull to the sides of that road as a column of cruisers with lights and sirens active come blasting their way, not everyone does.
This means as the suspect and police go around bystanders, several times they almost get into head-on collisions with opposing traffic. The pucker factor in some of those close calls is so high, it’s obvious the trooper has ice in his veins.
As for the suspect, the guy obviously is desperate to get away and perhaps feels a little indestructible. In other words, he’s not going to just pull over once he realizes there’s no shaking his pursuers – he’s not going to go down without a fight.
And he sure puts up a fight even as the trooper is right on the folded-down tailgate like a wolf on a lamb. Showing his desperation to stay a free man, the carjacker takes a sudden and late right turn onto a side street.
The lumbering pickup can’t stick the turn, swinging wide as it veers for the grassy shoulder and the trees beyond. At that point the trooper is just locked on, sending his cruiser after the Tundra no matter the cost. Letting the suspect drive away after going off the road isn’t an option.
Both vehicle wreck out big, ending the chase as Tallahassee Police surround the crash, taking the suspect who still had the gun in the truck into custody. This situation could have ended on a much worse note, but the Florida trooper showed incredible bravery, laying it all out there to ensure the chase finally ended.
