Stealing someone’s car is pretty scummy. Using a tow truck so it looks like you’re a repo agent taking a vehicle is even worse. But swiping a pastor’s ride as it’s parked at church is a new low we don’t recall seeing before.
Camaro fleeing police crashes into house and sets it ablaze.
The car was gone in under 60 seconds as captured on a surveillance camera. When Bishop Barry Washington of Whole Man Ministries in Winston-Salem, North Carolina saw the footage he told WXII 12 News he was shocked, saying it only took the thief 45 seconds to steal his crossover.
But we’ve seen thieves use tow trucks to steal cars before. Sometimes they boost a tow truck and then use that to take a bunch of other rides, then they dump it. Other times they buy a tow truck through less legitimate means and use it for thievery as they please.
Just like in this case, using a tow truck allows thieves to look like they’re repo agents or have some other legitimate reason to be taking a vehicle. It’s like the home burglars who dress up as HVAC repairmen, carry toolboxes, and load up all your cool electronics into a work van so your neighbors don’t suspect a thing.
If thieves are willing to steal a vehicle from a church parking lot, possibly knowing it belongs to the pastor, do you think they’ll hesitate to take your ride? This is why we want to see more actions taken to crack down on such crimes because they’re largely going unchecked.
WXII 12 News spoke with Winston-Salem Police Department which said so far in 2024 there have been 251 reports of stolen cars, calling that number average. That doesn’t mean everyone should just accept so many vehicle thefts as just the way things are.
