If all goes to plan, 2025 could be a pivotal year for American automaker Tesla. The company is reportedly poised to release several more budget-friendly models as well as launch its Robotaxi service. With sales and other metrics down last year, Tesla needs a shot in the arm.
GM lays off half of its Cruise robotaxi employees.
We’ve heard from Tesla and Elon Musk before that more affordable, sub-$35,0000 or even sub-$30,000 electric cars are coming soon. But those promises were never realized for whatever reason.
Perhaps this time it will happen for real. Tesla needs to do something to tap more market potential, and drawing in lower-income shoppers is one way.
We’re not getting any details, including price points for these new more affordable Tesla models. What Elon Musk did divulge on a recent investors’ call recently was that economies of scale are starting to favor Tesla, which saw its lowest cost for both materials and labor ever in Q4 2024.
Most likely, these more affordable Teslas will be stripped down, lower range versions of existing models. We doubt an all-new Tesla model is being developed, although that is a remote possibility.
As reported by Reuters, on the investors call, Musk claimed Tesla Robotaxis will start ferrying around customers in Austin, Texas in June 2025. This will be a soft launch, with Tesla closely monitoring how the autonomous cars operate in the wild before service is expanded.
But Musk said later this year the Robotaxi service will be expanded to California and other areas. Phoenix, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth are obvious candidates since they have other autonomous taxi services already operating.
Just remember that Tesla has a history of promising big things and then either not hitting launch dates or just conveniently never mentioning different products or promised features again. There’s no telling if either will happen with the cheaper models or the beginning of Robotaxi service, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the year brings.
