Not Again: Waymo Robot Taxis Are Keeping People Awake At Night

Once again, Southern Californians who live near a Waymo lot are complaining about noise, especially at night. They say that “incessant” beeping noises from the robot taxis make it hard to concentrate and especially sleep, which is similar to other complaints we’ve heard in the past.

After spending six figures, frustrated man still doesn’t have Ford F100 restoration done.

Instead of the self-driving cars beeping their horns at each other, this time around it appears the culprit is the beeping noise the Jaguars make when put into reverse. As reported by KTLA 5, people living next to a Waymo lot in Santa Monica say the safety feature is annoying, some even describing it as noise pollution.

Obviously, that beeping is supposed to warn anyone near the robotaxi that it’s reversing, hopefully to avoid any accidents. Teslas also make a noise when put into reverse, although it’s much more subtle yet unmistakable. That might be something worth mimicking.

After all, residents claim the Waymo lot is hopping at night, which makes sense. A lot of people use the self-driving taxis when they’re out on the town. Sometimes it’s because they’ve been drinking and know they shouldn’t drive.

But for people who live by the lot, that can keep them from getting a good night’s rest as the Jaguars keep reversing out of their spots, beeping as they go. Honestly, that does sound annoying.

One resident started a petition on Change.org because of course they did. We doubt there are enough people in the Santa Monica neighborhood, let alone those who find the beeping a disturbance, to really make a difference with a petition. KTLA 5 says so far about 42 people have signed it.

Since Waymo is looking at expanding its robotaxi offerings to new markets, this type of problem could spread to other areas, unless Waymo realizes it might want to use a less annoying reverse warning sound.
