It is now official: North Dakota is set to raise its maximum speed limit to 80 miles per hour. The change puts the Midwest state on track to join an exclusive group of currently nine states, soon to be ten, that permit speeds that high.

Higher limits on wide, open roads reflect the state’s vast rural stretches where faster travel is common practice. For drivers crossing North Dakota’s long highways, the increase means legally covering ground a little more quickly.
