A cargo ship transporting hundreds of electric vehicles along with several thousand conventional vehicles was abandoned in the Pacific Ocean after an uncontrollable fire broke out in the vehicle deck, raising fresh questions about the fire risks associated with shipping lithium-ion battery equipped vehicles at scale. The crew was safely evacuated before the decision to abandon the vessel was made, but the ship and its valuable cargo remained at risk as firefighting efforts proved unable to contain the blaze. Maritime officials were monitoring the situation carefully given the environmental and salvage implications.

Fires involving electric vehicles on cargo ships have become an increasingly discussed topic within the maritime shipping industry, as the nature of lithium-ion battery fires makes them exceptionally difficult to extinguish with conventional methods. The fires can reignite after appearing to be extinguished, burn at extremely high temperatures, and may require enormous volumes of water to suppress. The industry is actively working on improved stowage procedures and fire suppression systems specifically designed for EV-laden cargo vessels, but the technology is still maturing.
