Memphis Crime Reporter Carjacked At Gunpoint

Memphis, Tennessee has had a real problem with carjackings for years, so we’re not surprised a crime reporter recently became a victim. Also not surprising is how the reporter’s station, WREG, took the matter super seriously because suddenly everyone in the newsroom realized it could happen to them.

Chinese woman rides on a Tesla’s hood in a bizarre road rage fight.

That’s the lie a lot of people tell themselves about these violent crime waves, that it’ll never happen to them. It’s especially true for journalists who for ideological reasons feel they must believe that supporting tough consequences for criminals is bad.

But when they’re held at gunpoint and their property taken, suddenly it’s a national emergency and everyone needs to take it seriously.

We get it – when someone you know and personally care about is the victim of a violent crime, it hits you right where it hurts. We actually don’t fault WREG reporters for feeling that way.

But they also seem to lack self-reflection and empathy for other victims of violent crimes as well as car theft in general. This callous attitude is common in newsrooms across the country, something we’ve experienced firsthand many times.

We’d love to think this will mean moving forward WREG will treat the victims of crimes, especially carjackings, with softer hands. Sadly, we don’t think that will be the case. It’s not that they’ve been particularly rough on those victims, it’s just that they and many other news organizations sympathize with the criminals.

While we understand that a lot of people who steal cars had rough childhoods, we also know a lot of people who had an awful start in life and yet they don’t hold other people at gunpoint, demanding their property.

This is why so many people at the moment aren’t feeling all that sad for the reporter who was carjacked at gunpoint. We do feel for the guy, but not any more than we feel for all the other carjacking victims in Memphis and elsewhere.
