California’s EV mandate is dead and President Donald Trump is the one who’s finally put a steak through its heart. It’s been confirmed that today, at 11 am EST, Trump will put his signature to three resolutions which passed Congress through the Congressional Review Act, stopping Governor Gavin Newsom from forcing citizens to purchase electric cars, reports Politico.

Honda is already backpedaling on EVs.

In other words, by the time you read this, the president will have already signed the resolutions and the deed is done. It also stops over a dozen other states which were set to follow California in banning the sale on internal combustion engine cars within their borders.

Of course, California officials are vowing the fight the action by Congress and the White House. After all, controlling what kind of vehicle people can buy is apparently a federalist matter, or something like that.

We expect this issue will be all-out war for a bit, but hopefully the Congressional action withstands the legal tests.

While we’re not huge EV advocates for our own personal reasons, we’re also not into banning electric cars. In turn, we’re not okay with forcing people to buy them. After all, products the government coerces people into purchasing usually suck.

Without incentive to make something compelling so consumers will want to buy them, automakers would just pump out garbage EVs in large numbers. Removing a mandate means they would have to create better battery-electric cars to persuade people to purchase them.

But green advocates worry that if EV purchases aren’t mandated, nobody will buy Teslas and such. If that’s true, then there might be some legitimate reasons for that. Authoritarians lack self-reflection, so they never step back and wonder if maybe they changed how they do things they might get better results.
