The infamous Tail of the Dragon has claimed another victim, this time a red Honda S2000 which crashed into the woods. Shortly after the little roadster went off the road at one of the turns, it caught fire and eventually was consumed.
Check out this Shelby Cobra that’s done right.
Many crash at Tail of the Dragon, a stretch of US 129, which draws quite a few tourists thanks to its 318 turns in just 11 miles of driving. Because of the thrill of the challenge, speeding is common as some find their skill outstripped while they either run into oncoming traffic or go off the road and into the trees.
We don’t know exactly what happened with this Honda, but we do know the car at some point left the pavement behind and crashed into the woods, It doesn’t appear to have collision damage from hitting a tree trunk.

However, after the collision it started smoking, then flames appeared. As a small crowd gathered to watch in horror, someone with a fire extinguisher in their car came to the rescue.
You can see in one of the photos the S2000 is covered in fire retardant that was sprayed in an attempt to smother the flames.
That effort was in vain and eventually the entire roadster was engulfed by a raging inferno. We don’t know if a fuel line was severed or what sparked the fire, but once it got going a mere fire extinguisher wasn’t enough to stop it.

There are many lessons to be learned here, and even more if dashcam footage of the crash ever surfaces. One is that while stretches of road like Tail of the Dragon are fun to drive on, you can get carried away and push your car too hard, too far, then pay a huge price.
At least nobody reportedly was hurt, but the world has one fewer Honda S2000.
