In a real The Dukes of Hazzard move, a guy in a stolen car and fleeing police jumped an open bridge in Seattle. The wild scene was caught on a traffic camera, showing someone doing the very thing many commuters have considered fancifully but have never had the guts to commit to doing.
Police bust a Camaro with a retractable license plate.
It’s probably best people don’t perform such a stunt, since reality is much messier than the fantasy you see on TV and in movies. Plus, the reality doesn’t look so cool on a grainy traffic camera positioned far away.
Footage that’s spread on social media shows traffic at a standstill on University Bridge as it opened to let ships pass underneath around noon on September 17. Rather than stop, the suspect went the wrong way, jumping the growing gap in the bridge.

Having crossed the Seattle University Bridge countless times, I’ve often pictured what such a bold stunt would look like pic.twitter.com/3ipfzXN2qK
The jump doesn’t look like much in the video, but you can tell the suspect broke the safety arms on both sides in the process. Despite what people think, those are made to break away easily, so that’s not impressive.
We can’t quote tell what kind of vehicle the suspect was driving, but we know it was reported stolen and that’s why Seattle police were chasing it.
While the suspect did get away, the stolen vehicle has been recovered. That’s because the windshield was broken when it hit the safety arms. Police also say there was also extensive damage done to the undercarriage.
What most people who watch The Dukes of Hazzard don’t realize is every time they showed a car jumping a river or any other obstacle, a Dodge Charger was destroyed. Regular vehicles aren’t made to be jumped any distance, so keep that in mind the next time you fantasize about jumping an open bridge.
