A security camera helped catch an evicted tenant who torched the landlord’s prized ’67 Mustang sitting in the driveway. This is pretty much the worst nightmare of every car enthusiast and is something we sadly have seen done before.
Car thefts are on the decline, but you need to remain vigilant.
The Mustang owner’s wife initially saw the fire because the family’s dog started barking. Wondering what the pooch was upset about, she checked the cameras and spotted smoke, then rushed outside to see what was on fire.
Thankfully, a neighbor had already seen the smoke and called for help, so firefighters arrived at about the same time. However, the woman already had a garden hose and was able to extinguish the flames immediately.
That quick response time kept the damage to the classic pony car minimal, otherwise it might have been completely lost.
With the security camera footage, it was established who set the fire: a woman named Gladys Reinos who had been a tenant but was evicted earlier this year. She was living in her car, which was parked across the street from the house.
It seems Reinos allegedly started the fire as revenge for the eviction. Talk about hitting below the belt.
Sadly, some people see no problem in torching or otherwise damaging your collector car because you did something they didn’t like. We guess it’s easier to target an object that can’t defend itself.
What made the situation more interesting is the house, which is located in Hialeah, Florida, has a gate across the driveway. The Mustang was parked behind that gate, so the suspect couldn’t get to the car but instead caught it on fire some other way.
Exactly how she did it wasn’t made clear in a report from CBS News Miami.
Thankfully the Mustang is going to be okay.
