A deadly crash on Houston’s I-10 Katy Freeway killed two men early Tuesday morning after a wrong-way BMW sedan collided head-on with a Tesla Cybertruck, sparking a fire that shut down lanes near the Washington Avenue and Westcott Street exit.

A Wrong-Way Collision Just After Midnight
Authorities say the first emergency calls came in around 12:05 a.m., reporting a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the freeway. Houston Police Sergeant Rebecca Dallas said the BMW struck an eastbound Cybertruck that was heading toward downtown. The force of the impact sent the Cybertruck into the path of an eastbound 18-wheeler.
Both Drivers Killed
The BMW caught fire immediately following the collision, prompting a response from the Houston Fire Department. The BMW’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cybertruck’s driver, a 66-year-old man, was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler remained at the scene and was not injured.
Cause Still Under Investigation
Police have not yet determined why the BMW was traveling in the wrong direction or whether impairment or a medical emergency may have contributed to the crash. The collision forced a full closure of the freeway’s eastbound lanes for several hours while investigators and cleanup crews worked the scene.
Investigators Seek Witnesses
Houston police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage of the crash to contact the department’s Vehicular Crimes Division. The case adds to a broader conversation about whether technology such as wrong-way detection systems and automated emergency braking could help prevent similar fatal collisions in the future.
