Dayton Man, 18, Indicted After Allegedly Shooting at Detective During Stolen Vehicle Chase

A Firearm Call Leads to a Detective Being Fired On

An 18-year-old Dayton, Ohio resident is facing several felony charges after authorities say he fired at a detective while riding in a stolen vehicle, an incident that triggered a police chase and standoff involving SWAT and hostage negotiators. Court records show Javien Robinson has been indicted on charges including having weapons under disability and possessing criminal tools.

How the Chase Began

The case began Dec. 4 when Dayton officers responded to a report involving a firearm in the 2700 block of West Third Street. Around 2:20 p.m., a detective spotted an unmarked law enforcement vehicle near Guthrie and River roads that had previously been reported stolen. As the detective followed, the person inside, later identified as Robinson, allegedly fired at him. No injuries were reported from the gunfire.

Standoff Follows Vehicle Recovery

Police tracked the stolen vehicle to a home in the 1700 block of South Gettysburg Avenue. A juvenile was taken into custody at the scene, raising concerns that additional individuals might still be inside the residence. SWAT officers and the Hostage Negotiation Team were called in to secure the area and manage the standoff that followed.

Robinson Detained, Firearms Recovered

Robinson was the second person arrested that evening. According to an affidavit, officers found him inside the home and detained him while investigators worked to determine his role in the shooting and vehicle theft. A search warrant executed at the residence turned up seven firearms along with two devices used to generate vehicle keys, items investigators linked to a series of stolen vehicles.

A Prior Case Barred Him From Firearms

Court documents state Robinson was already prohibited from possessing or being around firearms due to a prior failure-to-comply case out of Warren County. During an interview at the Dayton safety building, he reportedly acknowledged knowing about the firearms found in the house as well as the key-generation devices and their intended purpose.

Investigation Ongoing

Investigators say the search warrant was built from police reports and interviews gathered throughout the day of the incident. The case remains under review as prosecutors determine whether additional charges will be filed. As with any pending case, Robinson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
