There’s a collision repair happening right now in a body shop somewhere in Ohio. A Silverado came in with front-end damage — airbags deployed, forward-collision radar destroyed. Before last month, that body shop had options. They could source a remanufactured radar unit, a salvaged sensor from a low-mileage wreck, or an aftermarket replacement. Any of those would have shaved hundreds, sometimes over a thousand dollars, off the repair bill.
General Motors — a company already familiar to body shops through its steady cadence of recalls — just closed all of those options simultaneously.
On July 20, 2026, GM published an updated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Consideration position statement — quietly, as these things go — covering every Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicle on the road. The language change is surgical. Where the previous guidance merely “discouraged” non-genuine parts in sensor areas, the new statement “strictly prohibits” the use of “salvaged, recycled, reconditioned, remanufactured, aftermarket, or any secondary-market ADAS radars, cameras, sensors, control modules, wiring, brackets, and mounting hardware.”
Every single alternative. Gone.
The Safety Argument Is Real
Before getting to the business angle — because there absolutely is one — it’s worth being honest about the case GM is making.
ADAS systems are not like bumper covers or door panels. A forward-collision radar that was in a prior accident may have sustained micro-damage to its housing, mounting bracket, or internal calibration baseline that isn’t visible and can’t be tested for without factory-level diagnostics. Remanufacturers do their best, but they’re working without access to GM’s calibration data, manufacturing tolerances, or failure-mode specifications.
More critically, ADAS calibration is extraordinarily sensitive to physical mounting. A sensor bracket that’s 2mm off spec — from an imperfect remanufacturing process, or salvaged from a vehicle that sustained secondary damage — can translate to a lane-keep system that’s slightly blind to fast-closing traffic. Not always. Not predictably. That’s precisely the problem.
ADAS calibrations now appear in roughly one-third of all collision repair estimates, according to Mitchell International’s 2025 report. The volume of vehicles with active safety systems on the road has exploded. The risks of getting this wrong have scaled with it.
But Here’s the Part GM Isn’t Advertising
That safety argument is legitimate. It is also extraordinarily convenient.
GM’s new position statement doesn’t just set a safety standard. It legally eliminates every alternative parts source for a rapidly growing category of high-value components — on every vehicle it sells, for the life of that vehicle’s warranty. And beyond, given the reputational and liability pressure on body shops to comply regardless of what the warranty clock says.
The key word in GM’s warranty threat is “nonperformance.” If an ADAS system fails after a repair involving any non-GM part — including a salvaged unit from a like-kind-and-quality vehicle of the same year and model — GM can decline the warranty claim. That gives body shops enormous incentive to comply even when compliance dramatically increases the cost of the repair.
Who bears that cost? Not GM. Not the body shop. Your insurance carrier — and ultimately, you, through premiums.
The Insurance Industry Is the Real Audience Here
Here’s what GM understands that most consumers don’t: you don’t choose the parts that go into your repaired car. Your insurance company does — through the estimates they approve. Collision repairers have spent decades fighting insurers who spec aftermarket and salvage parts to hold down claim costs. The industry even coined a term for it: “steering.”
GM just handed every OEM-aligned body shop a document that says, in effect, “the manufacturer prohibits this.” That’s a different kind of leverage. A body shop that installs an aftermarket ADAS sensor against a GM position statement is now carrying the liability if that system ever fails — and every shop owner knows it.
This isn’t even uniquely a GM story. The GM position statement itself notes that Ford, Honda, and Hyundai have issued similar guidance. Every major automaker is quietly building a legal wall around their safety systems parts business, one position statement at a time. GM’s version just arrived with the most explicit prohibition language yet: strictly prohibits, not discourages, not recommends against.
The Total Loss Math Gets Uglier
There’s a downstream consequence nobody is discussing loudly yet. When OEM-only mandates push repair costs up, more vehicles cross the total loss threshold. Insurers write the car off rather than fix it. That’s bad for consumers who would rather keep a paid-off Tahoe than accept a depreciated insurance payout — and it’s especially painful in a used car market that has been tight for years.
It’s also one reason the aftermarket parts industry existed in the first place. OEM-only collision repairs have always been more expensive. The question is who absorbs the difference — the insurer, the consumer, or the total loss column.
The irony is pointed: a policy framed entirely around keeping vehicles safer on the road will inevitably push more vehicles off the road permanently, because the math of fixing them no longer works.
The One Thing to Remember
GM’s ban on aftermarket ADAS parts isn’t dishonest. The safety concerns are genuine, and anyone who has watched an ADAS calibration go wrong would be hard-pressed to argue that sensor provenance doesn’t matter. But position statements don’t exist in a vacuum — they exist inside a business context. And this one arrives exactly when ADAS components have become one of the most expensive and rapidly proliferating line items in all of collision repair.
When a manufacturer gains exclusive control over the most sophisticated, most expensive component category in their vehicles — and frames it as a safety initiative — the safety argument isn’t wrong.
It’s just not the whole story.
