People around the world are shocked to learn of the death of 29-year-old Alexa Stakely, a single mother who was trying to stop carjackers from kidnapping her son. Sadly, this tragedy was inevitable, as we’ve pointed out repeatedly, because carjackings by nature are violent. People will die if this trend is allowed to continue unchecked.

Deputies in Los Angeles shoot an alleged carjacker.

The carjacking happened at about 1:30 am on July 11 at a Columbus, Ohio apartment complex. She was there to pick up her 6-year-old son from a sitter after working her second job at a restaurant.

According to The Columbus Dispatch, Stakely loaded her sleeping son into her Honda CR-V, which she left running, then went up to the sitter’s door to retrieve her son’s belongings. But as she walked back to the crossover, the mother noticed someone was in the driver’s seat.

She ran toward the vehicle as it reversed, yelling for her child and telling the driver to stop. But the suspect instead struck her with her own car, knocking her to the ground so Stakely suffered a “fatal wound” to her head. She died trying to save her son.

After the suspect drove off, he ditched the car with the child inside a short distance away. But the damage was already done.

Witnesses described seeing two males running away from the Honda. Police already have a lead on who those two might be, thanks to witnesses’ descriptions.

We hope police catch the suspects and that they face true justice. It won’t bring Stakely back but it’s the least that can be done at this point.

The thing that really gets us is how so many have publicly downplayed carjackings, saying if you just hand over your keys nobody will get hurt. We always knew that wasn’t true, but sadly it takes tragedies like this to wake people up to the brutal reality.
