Hyundais Are Just Sloughing Their Paint

Hyundai owners are furious thanks to a fairly common peeling paint problem on their vehicles. There are entire groups on social media dedicated to the issue as well as countless posts on Hyundai owner forums, Reddit, YouTube, you name it.

It’s understandable why someone would be upset their vehicle that’s only a few years old is sloughing paint like a snake shedding its skin. After all, not only does it look bad, the fully exposed metal can begin to corrode since paint is more than a cosmetic feature.

Class action lawsuits have been filed against Hyundai for this issue in different countries. Different ones are in different stages, but they have applied pressure to the Korean automaker, both through the media and public.

Back in December 2022 a warranty extension was provided by Hyundai to Elantras, Sonatas, and Santa Fe Sports for the 2017 and 2018 model years for bubbling or peeling paint. As noted in paperwork filed with NHTSA, the problem seems to mostly manifest on the roof, hood, and fenders.

Even more curious, the issue seems to be with only white vehicles, with Quartz White Pearl and Frost White Pearl paints cited in the Technical Service Bulletin. The solution is to repaint the peeling panels.

Theories about why the paint problem even exists run the range. Many seem convinced about their explanation of the issue, but we find it curious the vehicles which have suffered from this all originate from the same plant in Alabama – that can’t be coincidence.

And Hyundai sadly isn’t alone in dealing with widespread paint peeling, with other brands like Tesal also combatting such problems. We actually think it’s far more insulting to have the paint peel off a $120,000 vehicle than one that was $28,000. But the people who are buying Hyundais often don’t have the money for a repaint or wrap, so that’s likely fueling harsh feelings.
