An 18-year-old Mustang driver is dead after what the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas describes as a possible street race. It happened on a residential street in the Houston area in the early morning hours as the teenager tried racing another car. The sheriff’s office said the other driver just kept going, not even bothering to check if the people in the Mustang were okay.
Watch a C8 Corvette literally destroy a Dodge Challenger in a street race.
We don’t know what caused the Mustang driver to lose control, only that it wrecked out in the front yard of a house. Footage taken by KHOU 11 showed the badly mangled Ford muscle car next to a downed stop sign. From that it’s obvious the vehicle rolled at least once, it not multiple times.
One witness says she woke up at about 2 am to a woman screaming for help. It was a 20-year-old female passenger in the wrecked car who was trapped and panicking. At the time the driver, who was the woman’s brother, was still alive but critically injured. He later died at the hospital.
Sadly, this is just another example of how dangerous and stupid street racing is. We could march all of the many fatal accidents in front of young street racers, even some of the old guys, and they would just smirk and keep doing their thing. It’s almost like they believe this sort of thing will never happen to them.
Even on a track that’s designed and prepped for racing, accidents happen, including fatal ones. But your chances of wrecking out while pushing the envelope on a public road is far greater. After all, streets are chock full of imperfections from potholes to uneven joints, sand on the asphalt, and more. Any of those can cause a vehicle being pushed to spin out of control, leading to a situation like this.
