It’s that time of the year where gyms are especially busy as people try combatting their holiday indulgences, but one gym goer took an unusual approach by parking their Mercedes in the pool. Footage of the black sedan underwater in the indoor lap pool was shared by first responders to the amusement of many.
A rare muscle car was wrecked in a stomach-twisting dealership accident.
The driver crashed through a large window on the exterior wall of the Redlands, California gym, the luxury car landing in the water. By the time the fire department and police officers arrived on the scene, the driver was out of the vehicle, which had sunk to the bottom of the pool.
Thankfully, nobody else was in the Mercedes and nobody was swimming laps at the time, or the incident could’ve been far worse. The fire department said the driver only suffered minor injuries.
As for the car, it’s likely a total loss. A tow truck was called to the scene and it hoisted the Mercedes up and out of the water before dragging the disabled vehicle out through the hole it made. At this point it’s likely destined for the scrap yard, although someone might snatch it up at an insurance auction and try getting all those electronics to work correctly after the pool adventure.
Why exactly the driver crashed through the side of the gym isn’t clear. Authorities wouldn’t confirm or deny if any suspicions of drug or alcohol use contributed to the accident. In fact, they wouldn’t speculate at all about the cause.
We know a fair number of accidents like this are caused by drivers mixing up the brake and accelerator pedals. When the car surges forward, they press the pedal they believe is the brakes harder, increasing the acceleration.
Some people also mix up reverse and drive on their automatic transmission. This is why in parking lots it’s always a good idea to press your pedals lightly and not make sudden movements.
