Flip flops are being blamed for a 71-year-old woman crashing her C5 Corvette while trying to make a right turn, slamming nose-first into a building. We know with the weather warming up a lot more people are going to be wearing their flip flops, but this crash demonstrates how unsafe they are when you’re driving a car.

The incident in question happened in the city of Eureka, Missouri on the afternoon of March 22. As the woman tried making a simple right-hand turn, she told first responders the 2003 Chevy Corvette just took off, almost like it had a mind of its own, as reported by Leader Publications.
We know for a fact cars don’t get spooked like horses do, which is one of the reasons people made the switch over a century ago. Obviously the C5 Corvette didn’t decide to surge forward through the turn, causing it to slam into a building that thankfully wasn’t occupied.
After the woman told police what happened, they noticed she was missing a shoe. Sure enough, checking the driver’s footwell in the ‘Vette they found the woman’s missing flip flop wedged under one of the pedals.
That sort of thing can happen with floormats or any number of objects, which has in turn caused many “unintended acceleration” incidents some have tried blaming on automakers.
This is why we refuse to drive while wearing flip flops. In some areas it might be illegal to drive barefoot, but in our opinion it’s safer than driving while wearing flip flops. You might want to consider wearing a different pair of foot apparel if you’re going swimming, to the beach, or just really love your flip flops.
In this instance, the woman suffered “moderate” injuries from the crash. But the C5 Corvette was pretty badly crunched, all because of a flip flop.
