The eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette marked a major shift for the model, moving away from its traditional front-engine layout to a mid-engine platform paired exclusively with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, leaving no manual option for the first time in the car’s history. Tremec, the supplier behind the C8’s factory dual-clutch transmission, has now introduced an aftermarket alternative aimed at addressing that gap.
A Direct-Fit Manual Option
Tremec’s new six-speed manual transaxle is designed to install in the same mounting locations as the factory dual-clutch unit, allowing shops and builders to convert a C8 to a traditional three-pedal setup without extensive structural modification.
Built to Handle Serious Power
The transmission is rated to handle up to 800 lb-ft of torque and roughly 1,000 horsepower, enough capacity to accommodate most C8 variants short of the range-topping ZR1. It also includes a limited-slip differential, giving builders a setup capable of handling significant power without sacrificing driveline durability.
What This Means for Corvette Enthusiasts
For Corvette enthusiasts who have missed the option of rowing their own gears, Tremec’s new transmission offers a legitimate aftermarket path to bringing manual shifting back to the C8 platform, addressing a gap that has persisted since the model’s debut.
Will Chevrolet Offer a Factory Option?
Whether Chevrolet will eventually offer a factory manual option for the C8 remains uncertain, given the regulatory, cost, and engineering considerations involved in offering a manual alongside the current dual-clutch setup. In the meantime, Tremec’s new transmission gives shops and builders a path to deliver what many enthusiasts have been requesting since the C8’s launch.
