Cadillac’s 2028 Eyes-Off System: The Hardware, Repair Costs, and Legal Gray Zone

Those camera-encrusted Escalades and Yukons you’ve been passing on the interstate are not one thing. They’re two, and the difference matters more than the roof racks suggest.

General Motors confirmed in March that it had begun supervised testing of its next-generation automated system on limited-access highways in California and Michigan, with more than 200 manual and supervised development vehicles headed into live traffic. Some of those trucks are doing nothing clever at all — they’re manually driven data-collection rigs hauling production-intent sensors and compute, recording what real roads and real drivers actually do. Others have the automated stack switched on, with a trained test driver who can grab control instantly. GM says its data-collection fleet had already covered more than a million miles across 34 states before the automated half of the program went live.

That distinction — logging versus driving — is the whole story of how a system like this gets built, and it explains why you’ll see identical-looking SUVs behaving completely differently in traffic.

What “eyes-off” actually means, legally

GM announced last October that eyes-off driving arrives in 2028 on the Cadillac Escalade IQ, highways first, with a footnote noting availability and permissible use will vary by state. The company describes the system as one that is “not dependent on continuous driver vigilance for safety.” Read that sentence carefully, because it’s the entire legal pivot.

Today’s Super Cruise is SAE Level 2. The car steers, accelerates, brakes, and changes lanes, and you are still the driver — full stop, legally and practically. Every crash is your crash. Eyes-off puts the machine into Level 3 territory, where the system performs the dynamic driving task within its defined operational design domain and the human becomes a fallback rather than a monitor. NHTSA classifies Levels 3 through 5 as automated driving systems, distinct from Level 2 driver assistance.

The practical consequence for owners: liability, insurance underwriting, and traffic-stop conversations all get murkier at exactly the moment the technology gets more capable. State law hasn’t caught up uniformly, which is why GM’s asterisk about permissible use exists.

Why the turquoise lights are the interesting part

GM says turquoise lighting across the dash and exterior mirrors will signal when the system is engaged. That color choice isn’t a styling decision — it’s an industry recommended practice, SAE J3134 “ADS Marker Lamps,” which specifies turquoise precisely because it doesn’t collide visually with amber turn signals, red brake lamps, or emergency vehicle lighting. Mercedes-Benz pushed for approval of the same concept in California and Nevada years ago, arguing it lets law enforcement determine from outside the vehicle whether the driver is legally permitted to be doing something other than driving.

That’s the part enthusiasts should file away. Exterior marker lamps aren’t for you. They’re for the cop behind you and the jury afterward.

Hardware: redundancy over elegance

GM’s approach is explicitly not vision-only. The 2028 system integrates lidar, radar, and cameras through sensor fusion — three modalities that fail in different conditions, which is the entire point. Cameras struggle with low sun angles and heavy precipitation. Radar sees through weather but resolves poorly. Lidar delivers precise three-dimensional geometry and doesn’t care about ambient light. Overlapping failure modes are what let a system stay operational when one input degrades, and eyes-off demands that, because there’s no attentive human watching for the moment it gets confused.

Underneath sits a new centralized computing platform, also debuting on the Escalade IQ in 2028, which GM says will unite propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment, and safety on a high-speed Ethernet backbone delivering up to 35 times more AI performance and 1,000 times more bandwidth than its current systems. GM’s vice president of vehicle autonomy, Rashed Haq, laid out the reasoning on the company’s engineering blog: the goal is a common architecture that scales from mainstream Chevys to premium Cadillacs without rebuilding the stack per vehicle.

What this does to your repair bill

Here’s the part nobody mentions at the press event. Every sensor GM adds is a part that lives in a collision zone and requires calibration afterward.

Lidar units are expensive and typically mounted where impacts happen — fascias, roof edges, mirror housings. A minor front-end tap on a 2028 Escalade IQ won’t just cost you a bumper cover; it’ll cost you a sensor and a calibration procedure that many independent shops aren’t equipped to perform. Windshield replacement on ADAS-equipped vehicles already routinely requires static or dynamic camera recalibration. Add lidar and a centralized compute module, and the threshold at which an insurer declares a vehicle a total loss drops meaningfully.

The Escalade IQL already starts at $132,695 including destination. Insure a six-figure EV with a sensor suite in every corner and comprehensive premiums follow. Budget for it.

Also worth knowing: Super Cruise isn’t free forever. Cadillac’s support documentation is clear that after the included trial ends, you need an eligible plan to keep the feature functioning, including map updates and precise positioning. There’s no reason to assume eyes-off will be different.

The regulatory clock is still running

NHTSA published a notice on July 31 summarizing a year of work under its automated vehicle framework, with comments open through August 31. The agency has begun a rulemaking to establish ADS performance requirements, proposed modernizing several Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for vehicles without manual controls, and reported that from June 2025 through the end of that year it received 517 alleged ADS crash reports and 787 involving Level 2 systems. That reporting engagement contributed to seven formal investigations and seven recalls through July 2026.

Translation: there is no finished federal rulebook for a Level 3 consumer vehicle sold nationwide. GM is building toward a target while the target is still being drawn.

State-level oversight adds another layer. California requires a permit to test automated vehicles on public roads, and the DMV’s testing program listed 27 permit holders as of May. That’s the framework those Escalades in California are operating under right now.

Practical takeaway: if you’re buying a Super Cruise vehicle today, buy it for what it does today — hands-off, eyes-on, on mapped highways, with a subscription attached. Nothing GM has announced retrofits eyes-off capability into existing hardware; the 2028 system needs lidar and a computing architecture your current truck doesn’t have. And if you’re the type who tailgates development mules to see what they’ll do, save yourself the trouble. Half of them are just taking notes.
