Kia Settles Over Optima and Sportage Windows Falling Into Doors

If you owned a 2016 or 2017 Optima or a 2017 Sportage and remember the specific noise a door makes when the glass suddenly isn’t attached to anything, there’s money on the table. Not a lot of money. But money.

Kia America has agreed to settle Le Beau, et al. v. Kia America, Inc., Case No. 8:22-cv-01545-FWS-JDE in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The settlement website defines the class as anyone who currently or previously owned or leased certain 2016-2017 Optima and all 2017 Sportage models. Claims close November 23, 2026. Opt-outs and objections are due October 23, 2026. Final approval is set for January 7, 2027 — meaning nobody gets paid until well after that, assuming no appeals.

The court-authorized claim form runs eight sections and offers two separate tracks: reimbursement for out-of-pocket repair costs, or a dealer service card. The exact payout schedule, caps, and documentation standards live in the Settlement Agreement posted on the Documents page. Read it before you file, because your reimbursement almost certainly won’t be a flat number.

The part that fails is a plastic spool the size of a hockey puck

Here’s what nobody tells owners at the service counter. These cars don’t use a scissor-type regulator. They use a cable-drive design: the window motor turns a toothed drum, two steel cables wind onto and off that drum in opposite directions, run around corner pulleys, and pull a carrier plate up and down a rail. It’s compact, cheap, and light. It also concentrates every bit of load onto one molded plastic component.

That component is the drum gear, and Kia’s own documentation says so. NHTSA’s public bulletin archive holds the June 2020 Sportage bulletin, SA418, which addresses front window regulators on 2017 QL Sportages built between December 15, 2015 and May 31, 2016. A March 2021 bulletin, BOD 300, covers 2016-2017 JFa Optimas built September 1, 2015 through July 31, 2016, and attributes inoperative windows to “a drum gear separating and/or breaking.”

When that drum splits, the cables go slack instantly. There’s nothing holding the glass. It falls into the door cavity, and no amount of stabbing at the switch brings it back.

Kia’s own fix is a $20 part and half an hour of labor

This is the detail worth the price of admission. Kia never told dealers to replace the regulator assembly. Both bulletins call for swapping the drum gear alone — part numbers 82473 D3000FFF and 82483 D3000FFF, plus white lithium grease and a brush. The two part numbers are handed and explicitly not interchangeable; using the wrong one winds the cable backward.

The published labor times are the giveaway. The Optima bulletin allows 0.5 hours for one front door, 1.0 for both fronts, and 0.6 for a single rear door. The Sportage job pays 1.2 hours for both front doors together.

Compare that to the quotes owners have been getting for complete regulator-and-motor assemblies at $350 to $500 per opening. If a shop is charging you for a full assembly on one of these cars, they’re solving a problem Kia already diagnosed more cheaply. Print the bulletin. Hand it to the service advisor. The winding tool was auto-shipped to dealers, so any Kia store should have it in the SST drawer.

Why this was never free for most owners

The Sportage document labels itself a Service Action, which it defines as “a repair program without customer notification” performed during the warranty period, with a district parts and service manager’s approval required outside it. Translation: Kia fixed it quietly for cars still in warranty and left everyone else to pay.

Do the math. Kia’s basic warranty runs five years or 60,000 miles from first service. The affected Sportages were built in the first half of 2016. By June 2020, when SA418 landed, a huge share of them were already out of coverage — and the Optima bulletin didn’t arrive until March 2021. The people who needed it most got the news last.

And why NHTSA never forced a recall

Federal power window rules aren’t about durability. FMVSS No. 118 exists, by its own terms, to minimize death or injury from accidental operation — it governs when a window is allowed to close, express-up auto-reversal, and remote actuation limits. Nothing in it says a regulator has to survive ten years of use.

A recall requires a defect posing an unreasonable risk to safety. A window that won’t go up is miserable, expensive, and a theft magnet, but it doesn’t clear that bar the way a failing airbag inflator does. That gap is precisely why owners ended up in federal court instead of at a free recall repair.

The insurance answer is no

Don’t bother calling your carrier. A regulator that fails on its own is mechanical breakdown, not a covered peril. Comprehensive responds to external causes — theft, hail, a rock through the glass. If the glass itself shattered on the way down, that’s arguably a glass claim; the plastic gear that dropped it isn’t. Mechanical breakdown insurance or a service contract is the only product that touches this, and almost nobody carries it on a nine-year-old Optima.

Practical takeaways

If you still have receipts, file. Repair orders showing the VIN, mileage at the time of repair, the date, the work performed, and proof of payment are what the administrator wants. Dealer and reputable independent shop invoices both count.

If you spent serious money — the named plaintiffs allege repair bills approaching $2,000 for four windows on a single Sportage — run the settlement’s schedule against what you actually paid before you file. Submitting a claim releases your right to sue Kia over this separately. October 23 is your last day to walk away instead.

If you’re shopping one of these used, cycle every window fully up and down twice at idle. Listen for a click or a hesitation at the top of travel. A drum gear that’s already cracked will usually announce itself before it lets go, and it’s the cheapest inspection you’ll ever run.
