A felonious assault suspect decided to run from police in Grand Rapids, Michigan with local police, deputies, and Michigan State Police all joining in the pursuit. It wasn’t long before the trooper became the shining star, ending the chase once and for all.
Watch a trooper get stuck on a suspect’s bumper and taken for a ride.
As the video begins, we see the trooper fall in line with a column of pursuing vehicles, all of them not going super fast. The suspect is in a Saturn, so we guess that’s why this chase is going at a crawl, or maybe because the suspect is concerned about ice on the roads.
Before long, the officer at the back pulls to the side to let the trooper advance. That’s a good move, probably at the direction of someone higher up in the department. Soon, it’s only going to be the trooper giving chase, so having him towards the front is a wise move.
Deputies stop chasing once the suspect charges through a red light, likely following their department’s policy. There’s been considerable discussion about whether such pursuit policies protect the public or actually encourage suspects to engage in risky maneuvers knowing that will end the chase.
Whichever is true in this situation, what we know is the trooper is allowed to continue following the suspect, which he does without lights and sirens, casually gaining on the Saturn which slows down once deputies stop chasing.
Once the assault suspect realizes there’s another cop in pursuit, he tries another low-speed run at around 45 mph. Why exactly this person thinks driving slow like that will ditch the police is open for debate, but the guy almost causes a crash going through a red light, so we find this an interesting strategy.
Running red lights doesn’t stop the trooper from catching up and eventually pitting the Saturn, which is no match for the heavier, larger police cruiser. And thus ends one of the weirder police chases we’ve seen in a while.
