Ford’s Explorer and Aviator Can Now Recline Their Own Driver’s Seat, No Passenger Required

Ford just filed a new Explorer and Aviator seat recall, and the defect description alone is unusual: the driver’s seat can recline itself while the truck is sitting empty in a driveway. No one has to be sitting in it. No one has to touch it. A remote start or a remote unlock is apparently enough to trigger the motor, and if a child happens to be buckled into the second row when it happens, the falling seatback can trap them.

That’s the recall. It is not the interesting part.

The interesting part is the calendar. This is the second time in eight days that Ford has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about a seat on this exact pair of SUVs moving on its own. On July 14, Ford disclosed that nearly 388,000 Explorer and Aviator second-row seats have an easy-entry switch that can bind and let the seat tip or slide while the vehicle is being driven. We covered that recall in detail, including the part Ford would rather owners skip past: it was the second attempt at fixing a defect the company already believed it had solved back in 2025. A week later, on July 21, Ford opened a completely separate file, NHTSA campaign 26V470000, for 79,579 of the same two nameplates, over a front seat that reclines by itself with nobody in the truck.

Two different seat recalls, one platform, eight days apart. That is not a story about a single strange glitch. It is a story about what happens when a car seat stops being a mechanical object and becomes a networked one.

What Ford’s Explorer and Aviator seat recall actually says

According to Ford’s filing, the driver’s seat in affected 2026-2027 Explorers and Aviators built between November 24, 2025, and June 27, 2026, can recline unintentionally during certain scenarios, such as remote unlock or remote start. Ford says it isn’t aware of any crashes or injuries tied to the defect. The remedy, per the filing, is still under development. Ford doesn’t yet know how it plans to fix the 79,579 vehicles it just told the government need fixing.

That sounds backward to anyone who assumes a recall only gets announced once a company knows how to solve it. It isn’t backward. Federal law requires an automaker to notify NHTSA within five business days of determining a safety defect exists, whether or not a repair is ready. Ford has leaned on that timeline often this year. Its roof rail recall from earlier this month didn’t have replacement parts ready either, and a 48,000-vehicle power-loss recall in March told owners a fix wouldn’t exist until September. Announcing first and engineering later has become less an exception at Ford than a habit of how its 2026 has gone.

Two different ways for a seat to fail

What makes the driver’s seat recall different from its second-row sibling is the failure mode itself. The second-row problem is mechanical: a plastic bezel around a switch binds up, physically preventing the switch from resetting, and the seat tips as a result. You can point to the part. You can hold the failed bezel in your hand. The driver’s seat problem has no equivalent part to point to yet, because a remote start command has to travel through a chain of modules, a body control unit, a seat control module, a network wake-up sequence, before it ever reaches a motor. Somewhere in that chain, a signal meant for the door locks or the climate system appears to be waking up the seat motor instead.

A worn part eventually shows itself. A software state has to be caught in the act.

That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should. Power seats used to be simple: a motor, a track, a switch. Modern ones are wired into the same network as the phone-as-key system, the remote start module, and the walk-away lock sensors, because that’s how a seat is able to glide back to a saved position the moment its owner climbs in. The convenience of a memory seat and the convenience of starting an Explorer from a kitchen counter were built on the same wiring. This recall is the first hint that they can also fail on it.

The Explorer and Aviator seat recall fits a bigger industry problem

Zoom out and the Explorer/Aviator platform’s 2026 has been rough even before this recall. Ford separately recalled 66,000 Lincoln Nautilus and Explorer hybrids this month over a fix that didn’t hold, and the current-generation Explorer, which launched for the 2020 model year, has now accumulated 32 separate NHTSA recall campaigns on just its rear-wheel-drive gas trim, according to the agency’s own vehicle history records. That is not a count of complaints or investigations. That is finished, filed recalls, on one drivetrain configuration of one nameplate.

Ford’s overall 2026 recall count passed 10 million vehicles back in July, and this newest campaign is small by comparison. But scale isn’t really the point. The point is what kind of defect keeps showing up. A decade ago, an automaker’s most persistent recall problem was usually a supplier’s bad batch of steel or a leaking gasket. Ford’s most persistent problem in 2026 increasingly looks like software and electronics that behave differently once a few million real driveways, phones, and weather conditions get involved, conditions no test track fully replicates.

What owners should actually remember

None of this means Explorer or Aviator owners should worry every time they warm up the truck with remote start. Ford says it has no reports of injury, and the affected population is a small slice of a slice of everything the company has built since 2020. But the pattern is worth remembering longer than this specific recall will be. The next defect on a modern SUV is less likely to be a bolt that shears or a bezel that cracks than a sequence of electronic events nobody thought to test for, arriving in a seat, a door handle, or a steering system that used to only need to be built correctly once.

Building the part correctly used to be the whole job. Now the part has to behave correctly, too, and that turns out to be a very different kind of quality control.
