Ford just told federal regulators that almost 388,000 Explorers and Lincoln Aviators have second-row seats that can tip or slide while the vehicle is moving. That’s the announcement. The real story is buried in one sentence of Ford’s own paperwork: some of the vehicles showing up with this exact problem again had already been through a recall for it last year. The first fix didn’t quietly fail somewhere out in the field. It failed on cars dealers had already certified as repaired.

The new recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as 26V451, covers 160,391 Lincoln Aviators from the 2020 through 2027 model years and 227,520 Ford Explorers from 2020 through 2026. The problem sits in the second-row outboard seats’ easy-entry switch, the button that tips and slides the seat forward so someone can climb into the third row. Ford’s own filing says the plastic bezel around that switch can bind or stick, which “may result in the seat tipping, and/or sliding unexpectedly, potentially while driving.”
None of that would be especially interesting if this were Ford’s first attempt at solving it. It isn’t. In June 2025, Ford’s Field Review Committee approved a nearly identical campaign, recall 25V393, covering roughly 304,600 Explorers and Aviators from the 2020 through 2025 model years. The stated cause was narrow: a trim bezel had been installed incorrectly at Ford’s seat supplier, creating enough interference with the switch button to make it stick. The fix was just as narrow. Dealers were told to inspect the bezel and replace it only if it was damaged or missing.
Ten months later, Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group went back through field data and found five new reports of the same unrequested seat movement, on vehicles built after the supplier had supposedly corrected its installation process. That triggered a fresh investigation in May 2026. When Ford then dug into vehicles that had actually gone through the 2025 recall, the reviewers found four more reports of seats tipping or sliding on cars that were, on paper, already fixed.
That is the detail worth sitting with. This isn’t a story about a recall failing to reach every affected car. It’s a story about a repair that didn’t hold up on the cars it did reach.
Ford’s own numbers make the shift in thinking obvious. The 2025 recall estimated that only 6 percent of its 304,600-vehicle population actually had the defect, consistent with a one-time assembly mistake at a single supplier. The 2026 recall estimates 100 percent of its larger population is affected. Somewhere between those two filings, Ford’s understanding of this part quietly moved from an isolated assembly error to an inherent weakness in the design itself.
The remedy backs that reading up. Ford’s root-cause section for the new recall admits the specific cause is still undetermined, but the evidence points to something more mundane than bad installation: bezels that were correctly seated at the factory, and correctly reseated by dealers under the first recall, are coming loose anyway, with warranty claims pointing to broken retention tabs. The fix this time isn’t an inspection checklist. It’s a redesigned bezel and housing engineered to grip harder than the original part. The actual engineering solution to a recall covering nearly 400,000 SUVs turned out to be a sturdier piece of interior trim plastic.
There’s a broader lesson in how this recall came together. Ford’s filing lists exactly one formal owner complaint tied to the defect. One complaint did not trigger a recall covering 387,911 vehicles. Warranty claims and Ford’s internal review process did. Automakers track failure patterns through parts returns and dealer repair orders long before most owners think to file anything with the government, so by the time a handful of complaints show up in NHTSA’s public database, the manufacturer has usually already been studying the pattern internally for months.
It’s worth asking why a car seat needs a switch in the first place. The easy-entry feature exists because the Explorer and Aviator compete in a three-row segment where third-row access is an actual selling point, and a seat that tips and slides itself out of the way beats asking a passenger to climb over a folded seatback. That convenience came bundled with a small motorized, switch-activated mechanism bolted into a seat that never used to need one. Every powered convenience feature added to a modern interior is also a new part that can fail in a new way, and this recall is a clean example of that trade-off.
This also isn’t the only second-row complaint this platform has generated lately. Ford separately recalled 2020 through 2026 Explorers and Aviators this past March over seat belt anchor bolts at the same second-row seating position. This SUV’s cabin has made news for parts coming loose before, too. Add it to Ford’s rollaway year of Mustang and Mach-E recalls, and the back seat of these three-row SUVs has had a rough 2026 even before counting the seats that might tip over on their own.
If you own an Explorer or Aviator that already went through the 2025 bezel inspection, don’t assume that visit covers you. This recall exists specifically because that repair didn’t hold for everyone. Check your vehicle’s recall status by VIN rather than relying on memory of a dealer visit from last year. The new remedy is free, and Ford is not advising owners to stop driving the vehicle, but the smart move is to get the new bezel installed rather than assume last year’s paperwork already covered it.
