GM Drove Hands-Free From Coast to Coast in Canada. It Left the Five-Year Federal Data Ban Out of the Press Release.

GM Canada spent this summer driving a fleet of Chevrolets, Buicks, GMCs and Cadillacs from Victoria, British Columbia, to St. John’s, Newfoundland, letting the vehicles handle nearly the entire route with their hands off the wheel. The automaker says it’s the first time Super Cruise, its hands-free driving system, has covered a compatible highway network from one Canadian coast to the other. That’s a legitimately impressive feat of mapping and engineering.

It’s also not the most interesting part of the story. The interesting part is what it actually takes for a car company to earn the right to let go of the wheel across an entire country, and what riding along in exchange for that convenience actually costs you.

What “Coast to Coast” Really Means

Super Cruise works by combining cameras, radar, GPS and pre-scanned LiDAR maps to figure out exactly where a vehicle sits within its lane, then handling steering, braking, acceleration and lane changes on roads GM has designated “compatible.” A camera aimed at the driver’s face confirms attention is still on the road; look away too long, and the system slows the car to a stop and calls an OnStar advisor. None of that works on a road GM hasn’t already mapped, which is why this year’s headline addition is specific: new coverage in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, closing the gap that kept the system from stretching truly coast to coast.

That mapping work is done largely out of GM’s Canadian Technical Centre in Ontario, where more than 1,100 engineers across three campuses build and test the control software, lane-change logic and precision maps behind Super Cruise before exporting that work worldwide.

Here’s the detail worth sitting with: before Super Cruise can activate on any stretch of pavement, someone at GM has to have already driven that exact stretch with mapping hardware and captured a laser-precise scan of it, accurate enough that the car can place itself in its lane without depending on paint stripes that fade, get plowed under, or simply don’t exist on some rural stretch of the Yellowhead Highway. A hands-free system doesn’t spread the way a software update does. It spreads the way a highway gets built: mile by mile, at real capital cost, except GM is the one paying for the survey work, and you’re the one who eventually pays for the results.

Then Comes the Subscription

New GM vehicles equipped with Super Cruise include three years of OnStar connectivity to run the feature. After that, keeping your hands off the wheel costs $39.99 a month, billed through the same OnStar plans that already handle roadside assistance and stolen-vehicle tracking. It’s a recurring line item layered on top of the price of the truck, and it fits a pattern The Auto Wire has already tracked, one where automakers increasingly meter convenience features by the month instead of selling them once at the dealership.

The Backbone Doing the Work Already Has a Case File

Super Cruise’s ability to know exactly where a car is, and whether its driver is actually watching the road, runs entirely on OnStar’s connected-vehicle network. That’s the same backbone the Federal Trade Commission spent the past two years formally sanctioning GM over.

The FTC’s complaint, finalized into an order in January 2026, alleged that GM’s OnStar Smart Driver feature collected precise geolocation data as often as every three seconds, along with driving behavior like hard braking, speeding and late-night trips, then sold that information to consumer reporting agencies. Those agencies packaged it into reports insurance companies used to raise premiums or deny coverage, often without drivers realizing they had agreed to any of it. The order bans GM and OnStar from disclosing that category of data to consumer reporting agencies for five years, requires genuine opt-in consent before collecting connected-vehicle data going forward, and forces the company to let consumers see and delete what it already has. Then-FTC Chair Lina Khan said the agency was protecting people from “unchecked surveillance.”

None of that makes Super Cruise itself illegal, and Smart Driver isn’t the same feature. But they run on the same connected pipeline, the same geolocation tracking, the same driver-facing camera logic, and the same company regulators just spent two years reining in. GM’s summer road trip press release doesn’t mention consent, data retention, or how any of this interacts with Canada’s own privacy law, a different regime than the one that just restricted the company’s U.S. operations. That’s worth noticing, especially since The Auto Wire has already covered this exact pattern playing out with other automakers.

Why This Outlasts One Road Trip

Hands-free and eyes-off driving is turning into the industry’s next real battleground, not just a headline feature. The software and mapping behind it has grown valuable enough that Tesla is now taking a fight over self-driving patent rights all the way to the Supreme Court, a sign of how much money is riding on who owns this category of technology.

GM isn’t stopping at Super Cruise, either. The next generation, a hands-free, eyes-off system planned for the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, will lean on this same infrastructure even more heavily. Whatever data and consent framework gets sorted out now, in a country with less regulatory scrutiny of connected vehicles than the U.S. currently has, will likely become the template for what comes next.

GM proved this summer that a car can drive itself, hands-free, from one Canadian coast to the other. What it didn’t advertise is that the whole way, the car never once stopped watching you back.
