The Internet Called It A ‘Snitch Car’ Patent. Ford’s Filing Says Something Very Different.

Somewhere in the comments under a story about a new Ford patent this week, a reader summed up the internet’s mood in one furious paragraph: cars are about to start ratting out speeders to the police, and the country is sliding toward a surveillance state one dashboard sensor at a time. It’s a great comment. It is also almost entirely wrong about what Ford actually filed.

The patent in question, US 2024/0239352, titled “Systems and Methods for Detecting Speeding Violations,” does describe a vehicle that watches other vehicles, clocks their speed, photographs their license plates, and beams that evidence to another vehicle over a wireless link. But read past the alarming headline and into the filing itself, and one detail flips the entire story: the vehicle doing the watching isn’t your car. It’s the one with the light bar on the roof.

This was never a story about your Explorer snitching on you to a state trooper. It’s a story about Ford trying to build a better mobile speed trap for its own police cruisers, and in the process, accidentally showing its work on just how shaky the evidence behind an ordinary speeding ticket can be.

What Ford actually filed

The application was filed in January 2023 by six Ford engineers, led by longtime company inventor Stuart C. Salter, and published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2024. It was assigned to Ford Global Technologies, the subsidiary that holds the company’s patent portfolio, and it describes what Ford calls a “speeding violation responder system” built into, as the filing puts it directly, “a first vehicle (a law-enforcement vehicle, for example).”

That system pairs radar with lidar. The radar sweeps a wide area to get a rough read on a pack of cars, and the lidar then narrows in with a precise beam to nail down the speed of one specific vehicle. Once a target is confirmed, onboard cameras capture the plate, paint color, dents, stickers, even roof racks, and the system compiles all of it into a timestamped, geotagged record. That record can be sent by vehicle-to-vehicle link to a second patrol car for a coordinated pursuit, or handed off to a roadside internet-connected unit to keep tracking the car after the first officer loses sight of it. The patent even walks through a scenario where two cruisers sandwich a speeder from opposite directions, each logging its own independent record “to complement evidence derived from the first record” if the case ends up in court.

Every scenario in the filing script stars a “law-enforcement officer,” not a commuter. Ford wrote itself a screenplay about cops, not customers.

The detail nobody mentioned

Here’s the part that got buried under the panic: the application’s status, according to public USPTO records, is listed simply as abandoned.

An abandoned application isn’t a rejected one. It usually means the applicant didn’t respond to an examiner’s questions, didn’t pay a required fee, or simply let the process lapse. Ford, for its part, has told reporters the filing doesn’t represent a product plan and that customer vehicles won’t be transmitting driving data to police. Combined with the abandonment, that’s a pretty unglamorous but honest answer: this is one of the thousands of speculative filings automakers generate every year, the overwhelming majority of which never leave the page. The Auto Wire has covered another one of these Ford patents before, and the pattern holds: publication is not a promise. Automakers patent early and often, partly to protect an idea before a rival can, and partly because filing costs a lot less than building.

That’s worth remembering the next time a “future car” headline sends you into a spiral. A published patent application means an idea existed and someone paid a lawyer to write it down. It does not mean an engineering team is tooling up a factory.

Why the underlying idea still matters

Shelved or not, the problem Ford’s engineers were chasing is a real one, and it’s the same problem that’s gotten actual speeding tickets thrown out of actual courtrooms for decades: a radar gun’s beam doesn’t always know which car it’s talking to.

The patent spells this out almost apologetically. In one described scenario, a radar unit picks up two cars running side by side and returns what is effectively an average of their speeds. The system, as written, “may be unable to identify based on the speed measurement provided by the radar device whether only one, or both” of the cars are speeding. That ambiguity is exactly the gap a defense attorney drives a truck through: it wasn’t me, officer, it was the car next to me. Ford’s answer was to make the radar a first pass and let a narrow-beam lidar unit lock onto a single confirmed vehicle before any citation gets written, then back the whole thing up with photographic and video evidence built for the specific purpose of holding up in front of a judge.

In other words, the “creepy” technology in this patent isn’t really about watching you. It’s about building a more defensible paper trail for the officer who already pulled someone over, the sort of quiet, unglamorous engineering that never makes a commercial but determines who wins in traffic court.

The business case underneath the engineering

There’s a commercial angle here too, and it says something about where police-fleet technology is headed. Right now, most license-plate-reading and speed-detection gear bolted to squad cars comes from third-party vendors, installed after the vehicle rolls off Ford’s assembly line. If Ford builds that sensing and evidence-gathering hardware into the vehicle itself, it’s competing directly with the aftermarket companies currently selling that gear to police departments, and doing it on a platform, the Police Interceptor, that already anchors a meaningful chunk of Ford’s fleet business. Dodge just re-entered that same market with a turbocharged six-cylinder Charger Pursuit, proof that automakers still see real money in outfitting the cars that write the tickets, not just the cars that get them.

It’s also worth noting what this patent isn’t. Private plate-scanning networks like the one The Auto Wire examined in a California lawsuit over a tow-truck-mounted surveillance network that has already logged nine billion plate scans operate continuously, commercially, and largely outside a specific traffic stop. Ford’s system, at least as described in the filing, is tied to one officer, one vehicle, one violation, and one record meant to be used as a court document. It’s a narrower and more procedurally bound use of plate-reading technology than what’s already quietly operating on America’s roads today, patent or no patent.

Speed enforcement itself is also getting more aggressive at the legislative level, not just the engineering level. Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law made headlines this month, but as The Auto Wire reported, an old 1971 statute already on the books did more damage to one driver’s license than the flashy new law did. States and manufacturers are converging on the same target from different directions: closing the gaps that let speeders talk their way out of consequences.

None of that requires your car to inform on you. It requires the officer’s car to build a better case.

What to actually remember here

The panic over this patent missed the real story twice. First, by assuming a filing written explicitly for law-enforcement vehicles was secretly about consumer cars. Second, by not checking whether the filing was even still alive.

A patent is not a car. It’s an idea an engineer had, that a lawyer decided was worth protecting on paper. The most telling word in this entire filing isn’t “speeding,” and it isn’t “wireless.” It’s “abandoned,” sitting quietly at the top of a government record that most of the internet never bothered to open.
