Volvo has been quietly running one of the most interesting experiments in the industry for a decade now, and almost nobody talks about it. Not the safety cage. Not the seatbelt patent. The cloud.
The company announced on August 26 that an over-the-air update adds four new Connected Safety alerts to its newest electric models. Large Animal Alert flags a big animal on or near the road ahead. Vulnerable Road User Alert warns about pedestrians and cyclists detected on or near highways. Roadwork Alert calls out construction. Accident Ahead Alert pulls from connected Volvos and from traffic management centers to warn about a crash further up the road.

They join the two that started this whole thing: Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert, which launched in 2016 on 90 Series cars in Sweden and Norway and reached U.S. buyers as standard equipment for model year 2021. Volvo says more than a million of its cars now have the function switched on.
Read Volvo’s release carefully and there’s a small inconsistency worth flagging: the body copy names the EX90 and EX60, while the fine print lists the EX60, EX90 and ES90 across Europe, the U.S. and Canada, with timing varying by model. If you own one of the three, treat the fine print as the operative version and expect your car to get it when it gets it.
Why Sharing Beats Sensing
Here’s the engineering distinction that makes this more than a feature-list bullet. Every hazard-detection system on your car is bounded by line of sight. Radar, camera, lidar — none of them see past a crest, around a blind bend, or through the truck in front of you. A cloud-shared alert has no such limit. One car detects the hazard, uploads a position, and every approaching vehicle gets the warning before the hazard is anywhere near sensor range.
That turns a perception problem into a communications problem, and communications scale in a way that perception never will. The EX90’s hardware is genuinely impressive — a roof-integrated lidar working alongside cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors — but its detection envelope is still measured in hundreds of meters. A cloud alert can reach you a mile out.
Volvo also routes this data through the European Data for Road Safety framework, which means alerts generated by Volvos can reach cars from other manufacturers and national traffic authorities. That’s the part that actually matters. A proprietary hazard network is a marketing feature. A cross-brand one is infrastructure.
The Animal Alert Is About Swerving, Not Hitting
Large Animal Alert sounds like a rural novelty until you look at how these crashes actually kill people. IIHS analysis of federal fatality data counted 210 deaths in animal-involved crashes in 2024. In only 63 percent of those was the animal itself the most harmful event. Twelve percent were rollovers. Eight percent ended against a fixed object. Another eight percent involved striking a vehicle in transport.
Roughly a third of the time, the deer doesn’t kill you. Your reaction does.
That reframes what an advance warning is worth. A late detection at 65 mph gives you a reflex — and the reflex is a panic swerve, which loads the outside tires, upsets the chassis and puts you into oncoming traffic or a tree. A warning delivered a half-mile out gives you something entirely different: time to lift, scrub speed and scan, so that if the animal does appear you’re braking in a straight line instead of countersteering out of a slide you started yourself.
Another detail buried in that data: animal-collision deaths in 2024 peaked in the July-to-September quarter, not the October rut everyone plans around. The seasonal folk wisdom is out of date.
The Insurance Line Most Owners Get Wrong
This connects directly to your policy, and the distinction catches people every fall. Under a typical U.S. auto policy, striking an animal is a comprehensive claim. Swerving, missing the animal, and hitting a guardrail or a tree is a collision claim. Insurance trade guidance is blunt about it: there must be actual impact with the deer for the comprehensive claim, and hitting a fixed object instead moves you to the collision side of the policy.
Two coverages, often two different deductibles, and very different implications for how the loss is characterized. Any technology that keeps you in your lane instead of off the road is also, quietly, a claims-severity tool. Comprehensive coverage is optional in every state, incidentally — carry state-minimum liability only and neither scenario protects your own car.
Roadwork Alerts Target The Right Crash
The Roadwork and Accident Ahead alerts address a problem the federal data has been flashing for years. FHWA’s most recent work zone factsheet, built from NHTSA fatality files, counted 850 work zone deaths in 2024, down about 6 percent from 2023 — but with the share of fatal work zone crashes involving rear-end collisions moving the wrong way.

Rear-end collisions in a work zone are the signature of a driver arriving at a queue faster than the queue is moving. That is precisely the failure mode an upstream alert addresses, because it doesn’t ask the driver to react quicker; it moves the decision point further back.
What Owners Should Actually Do
Three practical things.
First, the feature is opt-in. Connected Safety lives in the center display’s settings, and the sharing goes both directions — you receive warnings and your car contributes them. If you never enable it, you’re a freeloader on everyone else’s data.
Second, and this is the maintenance note nobody thinks about: the lidar on an EX90 sits just above the windshield, and Volvo’s owner guidance explicitly warns against taking an ice scraper to the lidar glass or the windshield area in front of the camera. Both zones are heated for exactly that reason. Scratched glass in front of a laser emitter degrades detection, and that’s a sensor replacement, not a polish. Anyone quoting you a windshield job on one of these needs to be talking about recalibration before they touch the car.
Third, on the audio side: Spatial Audio in CarPlay with Dolby Atmos arrives in the same update, and it requires the Bowers & Wilkins system with its 25 speakers. If you skipped that option box, no software will conjure it.
The alerts are the real story anyway. Volvo has spent ten years building a hazard network that only gets useful when enough cars join it — and has now started opening it to other brands. That’s a longer game than most of the industry is playing.
