Stick Shift Stops Car Theft, Again

Estimated read time 2 min read

It always amuses us whenever someone refers to a stick shift as the best anti-theft device for any car. Sadly, there’s some truth to that declaration and we have yet another example of a manual transmission stopping some would-be car thieves in their tracks, literally.

Watch police use a Grappler Bumper to bring a chase to a quick ending.

The incident in question happened outside a gas station when a man parks his old Honda Civic outside before going in to buy some items. He leaves the keys to this ride in the ignition and that’s when the fun begins.

Four guys roll up in a minivan, which is super suspicious all by itself. Two get out and get in the Honda, then try driving off. They don’t get far as the Civic lurches forward, the driver obviously unfamiliar with the third pedal operation.

The owner of the car who actually knows how to row throw gears comes running out of the gas station but sees his ride isn’t going anywhere at the hands of fools. He runs back inside to grab his phone after leaving it in his haste, then high tails it back outside to start recording video.

He’s able to get not only the license plate of the minivan but also clear footage of the driver’s face, helping police to apprehend the guy later.

These are some seriously dumb thieves. The one guy didn’t know his limits. He should’ve just given up once he saw the stick shift in the Honda, but instead he tried looking cool in front of his friends and attempted to drive the car anyway. That got the attention of the owner, who then gathered enough evidence for a bust.

The big takeaway here is if you own a car with a manual transmission, it’s almost theft-proof thanks to that one feature. We can’t believe how many people are unable to use a stick these days.
