We keep telling people they need to be ready for anything whenever they’re driving, like how this BMW driver had to take sudden action to avoid a head-on collision in a Utah canyon. Fortunately, the victim’s car was outfitted with a dashcam so there’s evidence of what happened, plus we can analyze the incident ourselves.
Who caused this interstate crash?
That victim shared the footage with local news station KSL so we can all see it unfold. As the driver is going up American Fork Canyon with his girlfriend in the passenger seat, they approach one of the many sweeping turns in the road.
From around the bend came a speeding Ford Escape going the opposite direction. The other driver was going so fast they couldn’t properly negotiate the turn, so they suddenly crossed the double yellow line and came at the BMW head-on.
With less than a second to react, the Bimmer driver veered onto the snowy shoulder and just in time. The Ford clipped the German car’s side mirror, knocking off the cap.
While the person who ran the couple off the road continued speeding down the canyon, the BMW ran into rocks and trees, suffering enough damage it was totaled. Thankfully the people weren’t hurt, but they were understandably traumatized.
There’s no doubt the quick action by the BMW driver helped him and his girlfriend avoid serious injury, possibly even death. Coming that close to tragedy because someone else wanted to go too fast for the road is infuriating.
The girlfriend and her father are asking for the public’s help in tracking down the other driver. Unfortunately, the dashcam isn’t of high enough resolution to show the numbers and letters on the front license plate or that task would be easy.
While it would be wonderful if the person responsible would come forward or is otherwise discovered by authorities, we wanted to share this story to show that you might have to make a split-second decision in a panic situation like this. Knowing what you would do in advance can help since you won’t have any time to decide.
Things can happen lightning fast on public roads, so you need to always pay attention to your surroundings and not screens or anything else.
