We’ve been covering for a while how riders on ATVs, dirt bikes, and other small off-roaders like to take over areas and do lawless things. It’s a real problem in certain cities, including Kansas City, Missouri, where a guy on an ATV ran over a cop trying to spike the vehicle’s tires, leaving the officer in critical condition.

Rich guys in exotic supercars hold their own street takeover.

For too long, government officials as well as certain media outlets have covered these street takeover events as just harmless fun. We don’t care if it’s done with cars or ATVs, nobody should be allowed to just shut down a road so they can perform tricks.

But with little to no consequences for years, the kids who participate in this lawless behavior seem to think they own these cities now.

With this incident, which happened on April 12, the police officer thankfully made a recovery and is going to survive his injuries. But he easily could’ve been killed because some kid wants to ride like a madman on an ATV.

Predictably, the attack is being met with strong statements from police and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas. But we’ll see if a true crackdown on the street takeover culture is coming or if these are just platitudes on display in front of news cameras.

As the weather warms up, this type of illegal activity becomes more common. In other words, we’ll see soon enough how serious the mayor is.

Many times, the vehicles used by these kids are in fact stolen. They have no plates and the kids will wear masks or full-face helmets to hide their identities. Police in other areas have started using drones, cameras, and other innovations to fight this problem.

But none of that matters if prosecutors and other authorities don’t follow up with real consequences.
