Bentley’s First EV Won’t Fake a V8 — It Hired Musicians to Score One Instead
Every EV maker with a charismatic combustion past eventually runs into the same wall: electric motors are magnificently competent and almost completely mute, and silence doesn’t sell $200,000 cars. The usual fix is to pipe in a synthesized approximation of the engine you no longer have — a digital impression of a V8, more or less convincing depending on the brand. Bentley just announced it’s doing something else entirely with its first electric SUV, the Torcal, and the approach is interesting enough to be worth pulling apart.
Rather than counterfeit an exhaust note, Bentley built a piece of music. The system is called Bentley Dynamic Symphony, and its sonic identity is performed on real instruments — drums, viola, and bass guitar — by musicians rather than assembled from motor whine or a looped engine sample. Bentley is explicit that this is not designed to replicate an engine, but to evoke the same feelings, and it responds to throttle inputs the way an engine’s voice climbs with revs.
The experiment behind the decision is the good part
Here’s the bit that will land with anyone who’s ever stood at the end of a drag strip. Bentley’s team recorded and analyzed one of its V8s in a studio and concluded that the emotional hook wasn’t the mechanical tone at all — it was the rhythm. To pressure-test that, they set up parabolic speakers, played a Bentley V8 from one and had a drummer perform from the other, then walked between the two sources and found the energy and cadence uncannily close.

That instinct is technically correct, and it’s worth understanding why. An engine’s “note” is fundamentally a train of pressure pulses — each cylinder’s exhaust event is a beat, and the firing frequency sets the fundamental pitch you hear. What gives a cross-plane V8 its lumpy, offbeat burble versus the smooth tenor of a flat-plane or an inline-six is literally the spacing of those pulses: the firing order is a rhythm section. So when Bentley says a V8 is closer to a drum kit than to a synthesizer pad, that’s not marketing whimsy. A drummer and a combustion engine are both percussion instruments running at a few hundred beats per second.
Bentley leaned into a second detail that separates this from the usual fake-engine fare: imperfection. Real engines aren’t metronomic. Cycle-to-cycle combustion varies, mechanical tolerances introduce micro-timing jitter, and that tiny unevenness is a big part of why a running engine sounds alive instead of sampled. A perfectly quantized digital loop sounds sterile for the same reason a drum machine sounds different from a human behind a kit. Bentley says it deliberately built that human wobble into the performance, which is a genuinely clever answer to why so many synthesized EV soundtracks feel hollow.
The part nobody’s mentioning: this isn’t the sound the law cares about
Cool as the cabin symphony is, it’s a driver-engagement feature, and driver-engagement features aren’t what regulators regulate. In the US, any EV also has to emit a separate, external pedestrian-warning sound under FMVSS No. 141, the “quiet vehicles” standard, which exists specifically so that blind and visually impaired pedestrians can hear an otherwise-silent car approaching, accelerating, and slowing at low speed. That requirement has been mandatory for applicable EVs since September 2020.
And here’s a wrinkle even a lot of enthusiasts don’t know: you can’t just art-direct that exterior sound at will. NHTSA declined to let manufacturers offer driver-selectable pedestrian alert sounds, and cars of the same model and trim have to make the same compliant sound. So however orchestral the Torcal is on the inside, its pedestrian-facing voice in a parking lot is a regulated, standardized tone — not the viola section. Two different sounds, two entirely different sets of rules, and only one of them is optional.
What this means if you actually own one
The shift from exhaust to audio file has real ownership consequences that don’t show up in a press release. A combustion Bentley’s soundtrack came from hardware you maintain — headers, mufflers, and in the modern era valved exhausts that can crack, rattle, or seize. The Torcal’s soundtrack lives in amplifiers, speakers, and digital signal processing. That’s a double-edged spec. On the upside, “the engine note” becomes a software feature that can be revised or updated rather than a fixed mechanical trait, and there’s no exhaust corrosion to chase. On the downside, when a defining feature of the car is code and audio hardware, a dead amplifier or a corrupted sound profile is an infotainment-grade diagnostic job, likely dealer-tied, rather than a bolt-on fix at any muffler shop.

For buyers thinking about the long tail of ownership, that’s the question to sit with: a bespoke, musician-performed powertrain sound is a lovely differentiator on day one, but it’s also a proprietary software asset whose support lifespan depends entirely on the manufacturer. Wood veneer and hides age gracefully and predictably. Software features age at the mercy of whoever maintains the servers and the update pipeline.
Why Bentley is doing this at all
Sound is one of the last places a luxury EV can build character once you’ve exhausted the conversation about leather grades and open-pore timber. The Torcal joins the range as Bentley’s fourth model line, sitting alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga, and it arrives as the company works toward its Beyond100+ plan to go exclusively electric from 2035. If your brand’s entire pitch is theater and occasion, silence is an existential problem, and a bespoke score is a more defensible answer than a warmed-over fake V8 that invites unflattering comparison to the real thing you used to build.
A small nerd’s reward if you’ve read this far: the name isn’t just another landscape. Torcal comes from El Torcal de Antequera, a limestone rockscape in Spain, but Bentley points out it also traces back to the Latin torquere, to twist — the same root as the word torque. Naming your electric performance car after the etymological ancestor of torque is the kind of quiet flex that’s either brilliant or insufferable, and honestly it can be both.
The whole thing gets revealed in London on 23 September, at which point we’ll finally hear whether a viola can do the work of a 6¾-litre V8. Skepticism is warranted — plenty of EV soundtracks have promised soul and delivered ringtone. But of all the approaches to the silence problem, “hire musicians and chase the rhythm instead of the tone” is the first one in a while that’s built on a correct read of why engines move us in the first place.
