Honda Odyssey Airbag Petition: NHTSA Eyes 807,000 Older Minivans

Honda’s minivan is having a rough year in the airbag department, and the newest chapter is the one worth paying attention to — because it reaches back into a generation of Odyssey that Honda has, so far, said nothing about.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has opened a defect petition covering roughly 807,000 model year 2011-2017 Odysseys, prompted by a petition dated May 30, 2026 alleging inadvertent airbag deployment while the vans are in motion. Per ODI’s notice, the petitioner points to ten complaints already sitting in the agency’s database and contends the airbags can fire without a sufficiently severe triggering event — no impact, no rollover, no G-force threshold breach. The petition also alleges something more unusual: that Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Supplemental Restraint System data conflict, and that the SRS is recording inaccurate information.

That second allegation is the one to circle.

Why the model years matter

Look at what Honda has already conceded, and the gap becomes obvious. In April, Honda filed a Part 573 report for campaign 26V227 covering 440,830 Odysseys built between January 24, 2017 and June 3, 2022 — the fifth-generation van. Honda’s stated cause is that SRS control logic for the second and third rows contained insufficient deployment threshold margin, letting G-signal inputs be misread as side impacts and firing the side and side curtain bags. Supplier is DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee. Remedy is reprogramming or replacing the SRS unit. Honda pegs the defect rate at 0.1 percent and logged 130 warranty claims and 25 injuries between January 2017 and April 2026.

The new petition covers 2011 through 2017 — the fourth-generation van, a different platform with a different restraint controller and different sensor calibration. Nobody should assume the same code is running in both. What the petitioner is effectively asking NHTSA to determine is whether the failure mode — a threshold that can be tripped by road inputs rather than crash inputs — existed before the generation Honda already agreed to fix.

That’s a legitimate question and not a lazy one. Threshold margin is a calibration philosophy, not a single line of software. If an OEM’s side-impact discrimination strategy leans hard on satellite pressure and acceleration sensors in the doors and B/C pillars, and the algorithm’s job is to separate a genuine intrusion event from a pothole strike or an undercarriage hit, the margin you pick is a house style. House styles carry across generations.

The data-integrity allegation is the sleeper

Airbag control modules also serve as the vehicle’s event data recorder. When an SRS unit deploys, it writes a locked event record — delta-V, seatbelt status, sensor inputs, deployment commands. That record is what a crash reconstructionist, an insurance adjuster, and any eventual product-liability expert will read.

So an allegation that DTCs and SRS data conflict, and that the module is logging inaccurate data, isn’t a footnote. If the box that fires the airbags is also the box misreporting why it fired, every downstream forensic conclusion inherits the error. An owner who says “it went off over a pothole” and a module that says “side impact detected” produce a claim file where the owner loses by default. Proving the module was wrong requires an expert and money most minivan owners aren’t spending.

What happens next, procedurally

This is the lowest-stakes-sounding, most misunderstood action NHTSA takes. A defect petition is not an investigation into Honda. It’s an investigation into whether an investigation is warranted. Under 49 CFR Part 552, the agency conducts a technical review and notifies the petitioner of a grant or denial within 120 days of receipt. If it’s granted, Section 552.9 says a proceeding to determine whether the defect exists commences promptly — meaning ODI opens a real case, typically a Preliminary Evaluation.

For calibration on how long that road is: the fifth-gen van’s case, PE25018, opened October 28, 2025 on 18 complaints. The recall landed the following April. Ten complaints across 807,000 vehicles is a thin complaint rate by ODI’s standards, and denial is a realistic outcome — but Honda’s own recall chronology shows how the agency reads history. Honda first got notice of an incident in November 2017, determined by July 2021 that road surfaces and undercarriage impacts could reach the deployment thresholds, then concluded in October 2021 that there were no safety concerns. It reversed that in April 2026, after NHTSA came asking.

What it costs you if it happens

Here’s the part nobody puts in the recall notice. An inadvertent side-curtain deployment in a fourteen-year-old minivan is very likely a total loss, and not because the airbags themselves are precious.

A curtain deployment takes the headliner, pillar trim from A to D, and usually the roof-rail wiring with it. Side thorax bags are seat-integrated, which means seat back covers and frames. The SRS control unit is a one-time-use item — it is replaced, not reset. Add seatbelt pretensioners if they fired, and you’re stacking parts and book hours against a van with a four-figure book value. Insurers do that arithmetic in about ninety seconds.

Which brings up the aftermarket “airbag module reset” and cloned-module services that advertise themselves as a cheap alternative. Don’t. A reset module is not a repaired module, the crash data state may not be properly cleared or may be falsified, and you are handing the next owner a restraint system nobody has verified. If you buy a used Odyssey with a suspiciously clean history and an SRS light that behaves oddly during bulb check, walk.

Practical takeaway

If you own a 2018-2022 Odyssey, check your VIN and get 26V227 done — it’s a free SRS reprogram or module swap and it is not optional in any sense that matters. If you own a 2011-2017 van, there is currently no recall and no open investigation, only a petition, and you should not panic. What you should do is file a complaint with ODI if it ever happens to you, because complaint volume is literally the currency this process runs on. Ten complaints got a petition read. Eighteen got the newer vans a preliminary evaluation.

One last thing worth knowing about reading these filings yourself: they’re typed by humans under deadline. Honda’s own 26V227 report lists the Odyssey’s propulsion as compression ignition. It’s a gasoline V6 minivan. Treat the narrative fields as authoritative and the checkbox fields with a grain of salt.

Separately, and unrelated to any of the above, Honda has filed a fresh rearview camera recall covering 325,588 2018-2020 Odysseys, which swaps the previously-remedied Magna cameras for Sony units. If your van has already been through a camera fix once, it may be due again.
