Somewhere in a driveway right now, a Mercedes-Benz is trusting the wrong thing. Not its brakes. Not its transmission. A door switch. Because that switch has quietly corroded inside the driver’s door lock, the car may never get the memo that it’s supposed to hold itself in place.
That’s the real story buried inside Mercedes-Benz USA’s newest recall, an action that reads on paper like a routine door lock fix but is actually a window into how automatic safety features get built. The parking brake in more than 310,000 recalled Mercedes-Benz vehicles doesn’t directly verify that it engaged. It infers that it should, based on whether the car thinks the driver’s door is open. When that inference is wrong, so is the brake.
What’s Actually Broken (Spoiler: Not the Brake)
According to the recall Mercedes filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, campaign number 26V481000, the company is recalling 310,667 vehicles in the US: certain 2019-2022 A-Class, 2020-2021 CLA, 2022-2023 C-Class, 2024 CLE, 2020-2026 GLA and GLB, and 2023-2024 GLC models. That’s most of Mercedes’ compact and compact-SUV lineup, spanning two structurally unrelated platforms and seven model years.
The defect lives in a microswitch inside the driver’s door lock. Corrosion can creep in over time and make that switch stop reliably reporting whether the door is open or closed. That sounds trivial until you learn what the signal controls: Mercedes’ Auto-Park feature, which automatically applies the electronic parking brake once it senses the driver has stepped out. If the corroded switch tells the car the door never opened, Auto-Park never fires, and a parked car can roll away on its own.

Mercedes isn’t the only automaker whose parking brake got outsmarted by an electronic proxy this summer. In June, Ford recalled 741,000 trucks and SUVs after a glitch in its park-by-wire system could let vehicles roll away on their own. Weeks later, Ford was back with another rollaway-adjacent recall, prompting the fair question of whether 2026 is simply Ford’s rollaway year. The mechanisms were different in both cases, rooted in transmission shift-to-park logic rather than a corroded door switch, but the category of failure was identical: a control module assumed a fact about the vehicle that wasn’t true.

It’s not Mercedes’ first brush with a sensor-driven US recall this year, either.
