A Loose Fuel Tube Is Sending 106,000 Land Cruisers Back to Toyota Dealers

Toyota spent years convincing Americans to pay serious money for a nameplate built on the promise that nothing ever breaks. Now the reborn Land Cruiser has a fire-risk recall tied to a part you could hold in one hand.

Toyota filed the recall on October 14. It covers about 106,000 U.S. Land Cruisers from model years 2024 through 2027. A fuel tube connection close to the fuel tank can come apart. When that happens, fuel can leak, and a leak near an ignition source raises the risk of fire. That covers every model year of the current generation sold here, including trucks that may still be sitting on dealer lots. toyota

What’s actually letting go

Toyota’s recall announcement identifies the hardware: a resin fuel tube, which dealers will either secure with an added clamp or, when needed, replace along with the clamp. Modern fuel systems use plastic lines with snap-together quick connectors because they’re light, they don’t corrode, and they go together fast on an assembly line. The weak point is that the joint relies on a latch seating fully and staying seated through years of heat, vibration, and trail abuse. toyota

Toyota hasn’t said publicly whether the root cause is assembly or design. Still, the fix tells you something. A backup clamp tells you Toyota didn’t trust the original latch to hold alone.

The hybrid wrinkle

One line in the filing matters more than it looks. Toyota says fuel will keep leaking until the engine in the hybrid system shuts off. In practice, fuel only flows to the leak while the gas engine is running. Hybrids shut the engine off often at low speeds and at stops, which caps how much fuel can escape there. Don’t treat that as comfort. On the highway, or towing up a grade, the engine runs continuously, and so would the leak. toyota

The fix, and what it might involve

The work is free, and Toyota plans to notify owners by mid-December 2026. A truck that only needs a clamp should be in and out quickly. Tube replacement is a different job. History offers a warning here. When Toyota addressed a fuel tube problem on the Tundra, its dealer instructions required removing and reinstalling the fuel tank. Toyota hasn’t published repair procedures for this Land Cruiser campaign yet, so ask the dealer how long a tube replacement takes before you drop it off. toyota nhtsa

Toyota has been here before

In 2023, Toyota recalled 168,179 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid pickups from 2022–2023 because a plastic fuel tube near the top of the tank could rub against a nearby brake line and eventually wear through. The failure mode was different, but the neighborhood was the same. The follow-through numbers are sobering. The quarterly completion report shows 94,529 trucks counted as remedied as of the first quarter of 2025, which is only a bit more than half the population. That’s a reminder that a recall only works if owners actually show up. nhtsa

This is also the Land Cruiser’s second sizable U.S. recall this year. A May 2026 recall covered roughly 82,000 vehicles, including 2024–2025 Land Cruisers, and required a combination-meter software update. Neither recall is catastrophic. Together, though, they chip at the myth that this nameplate is immune to modern-car problems. toyota

What owners and shoppers should do

  • Check your VIN today. Owners can look up their vehicle at Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls, or call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Don’t wait for the letter. toyota
  • Trust your nose. A raw fuel smell around the rear of the truck, or a wet spot under the tank area, means you should stop driving and get it towed.
  • Mind the insurance angle. Comprehensive coverage typically handles vehicle fires. Still, you don’t want to argue with an adjuster over damage from a defect you’d been notified about and ignored. Keep your recall paperwork.
  • Shopping used? Ask for the repair order showing the campaign was completed. Land Cruisers hold their value stubbornly, and an open fuel-system recall is a fair reason to push back on price until the work is done.
  • Shopping new? The 2027 model starts at $57,880. At that price, confirm the fix before you sign. Don’t take “we’ll handle it at first service” as an answer. toyota

The fix is free. Do it before your next trip somewhere with no cell signal and no fire department. If you own one, are you booking the dealer now or waiting for the letter?
